Best Time to Surf Imsouane: A Month-by-Month Guide

Imsouane is one of those rare places that works almost year-round. The bay faces northwest, the Atlantic delivers consistent swell from September through April, and even in summer — when the big swells die down — the wave stays fun enough for beginners and longboarders.

But "almost year-round" isn't the same as "any time is equally good." The right month depends on your level, what you're looking for, and how much company you want in the water.

Here's what you need to know.

Why Imsouane Works Year-Round

Most surf destinations have a tight window. Imsouane doesn't — and it comes down to geography.

The bay sits on Morocco's Atlantic coast, sheltered by a natural headland that filters out the worst of the wind chop. The Cathedral wave, one of the longest right-handers in Africa, needs northwest swell to fire — and the North Atlantic produces that swell reliably for eight months of the year.

The Bay wave, closer to the harbor, is even more forgiving. It picks up smaller swells and stays rideable when the Cathedral is too big or too messy for less experienced surfers.

The result: there's almost always something to surf in Imsouane. The question is what kind of surf.

The Best Months: October to April

This is Imsouane's prime season. The North Atlantic storm track is active, pushing consistent northwest swells down the Moroccan coast.

What to expect:

  • Swell size: 1.5m to 3m+ on the Cathedral

  • Water temperature: 17–20°C (wetsuit recommended, 3/2mm)

  • Air temperature: 18–24°C

  • Crowds: moderate to busy, peaking in December and January

October and November are the sweet spot for most surfers. The swell is consistent, the crowds haven't peaked yet, the water is still warm from summer, and the light is extraordinary — long golden afternoons that make every session look like a surf film.

December and January bring the biggest swells of the year. On the best days, the Cathedral peels for 300 to 500 meters. This is when experienced surfers plan their trips around. It's also when Imsouane gets busiest — European surfers escaping winter, combined with the best waves of the year.

February, March, and April offer a gradual wind-down. Swells become less frequent but more playful — mid-size, clean, and ideal for progression. Spring is particularly good for intermediate surfers who want enough wave to work with without the intimidation of winter swell.

Summer: June to August

Summer is a different kind of trip.

The big Atlantic swells disappear. What remains are smaller, softer waves — consistent but gentle, rarely breaking above chest height on the Bay. The Cathedral goes quiet for weeks at a time.

What to expect:

  • Swell size: 0.5m to 1m, mostly on the Bay

  • Water temperature: 20–22°C (boardshorts or thin spring suit)

  • Air temperature: 25–30°C

  • Crowds: quieter in the water, busier on land

For beginners, summer is actually ideal. The Bay produces forgiving, slow-rolling waves that are perfect for learning to stand up, find your balance, and build confidence without getting punished by overhead sets. Our instructors can spend more time with each surfer when the conditions are gentle.

For intermediate or advanced surfers, summer is harder to recommend unless you're combining it with other activities — hiking in the Atlas Mountains, exploring Essaouira, or simply slowing down.

What Level Are You?

Complete beginners: Any month works, but June to September gives you the most forgiving conditions. Smaller waves mean more time on your feet, less time underwater.

Improvers (can ride green waves): October to April is your window. You want real swell to practice on — enough push to feel the wave's power and start working on turns. March and April are particularly good: consistent mid-size swell, fewer crowds than peak winter.

Intermediate to advanced: December to February for the biggest, most powerful days. October and November if you want quality without the peak-season crowds.

Water Temperature and What to Wear

Morocco's Atlantic coast is fed by the Canary Current, which keeps water temperatures cooler than you might expect for a country this far south.

  • Summer (June–September): 19–22°C. Boardshorts or a 2mm shorty.

  • Autumn (October–November): 18–20°C. 3/2mm wetsuit.

  • Winter (December–February): 16–18°C. 3/2mm wetsuit, boots optional.

  • Spring (March–May): 17–19°C. 3/2mm wetsuit.

At Moonsurf, wetsuits and surfboards are included in all our surf packages — so you don't need to worry about bringing your own.

Our Honest Take

If you're asking us when to come: October is the best month in Imsouane.

The swell has arrived, the water is still warm from summer, the crowds haven't hit their winter peak, and the light is unlike anything else on the Atlantic coast. It's the month our instructors look forward to most.

Second choice: March. The swell is still going, the crowds thin out after the winter rush, and the days are getting longer. You often get the lineup almost to yourself on weekday mornings.

Whatever month you pick, the Cathedral will be waiting.
